What Are Sapphires: Here's The Answer

What Are Sapphires

The Sapphires – in that exquisite velvety blue – is the birthstone for September. But, did you know that blue is the favourite colour of roughly 50% of the population of both genders? You’re probably not surprised by this, as I’m not either because blue teams well with every colour in the spectrum. Additionally, Sapphires stones are traditionally associated with harmony and sympathy, loyalty and friendship, honesty, truth, and faithfulness. No wonder then, that the Sapphire has become the gem of choice for an Engagement Ring because it symbolizes constancy, reliability, fidelity, mutual trust and understanding. In other words, there is nothing fickle about the Sapphire. The Sapphire is also believed to be imbued with positive vibes and thus brings joy and happiness to the wearer. Its enchanting colour is also associated with the sky and the heavens and is therefore connected to many religions including Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism.

Other Coloured Sapphires

When I think of a Sapphires, I automatically envision that beautiful, versatile, velvety blue but the fact is the Sapphire comes in many other colours. In the jewelry trade, sapphires that are not blue are referred to as fancies (just like coloured diamonds) according to their colour, e.g. fancy pink, fancy white, fancy yellow, fancy green, fancy purple, and fancy orange sapphires. The fancy orange, however, is unique because it has a fine pink undertone that has earned it the name ‘lotus flower’. But, the rarest of them all, from the Kashmir region of India, is the star sapphire, so named because of a light effect that seems to glide across the surface of the gemstone when it is moved.

Where found

In addition to the Kashmir district of India where, along with Thailand, they are believed to have originated, but Sapphires are also found in many different places in the world including the United States, Australia, Brazil, Africa, Vietnam, Burma, and Ceylon.
